I get many pleas for help in finding a job in mining. Most I refer to Careermine. For that is the site that lists every possible job in mining. Yet this one caught my attention, for it is a story of love. At least I think so. I have the sender’s permission to post what she sent me. Here it is.
My name is Fernanda Musi de la Vina and I am a Mexican lawyer. In addition to qualifying as a lawyer in Mexico, I have also obtained a Specialty and a Masters, both in Public Administration. Currently, I am studying a Business Administration Degree Online.
From 2011 to 2013, I worked in the Nation´s Supreme Court of Justice in Mexico. At the Supreme Court, I was responsible for monitoring and organizing various committees that the ministers (judges) participated on. These committees review matters of great importance for the Supreme Court and for the entire judicial system, such as combating judicial corruption. Before working at the Supreme Court, I worked as legal counsel for a private company and also worked in a law firm in Mexico City.
I have recently moved to Vancouver because my partner is a lawyer here and we wanted to further our careers here. In order to do that, I have obtained my Canadian work visa.
Currently, I am working in Vancouver at RentMoola, a Canadian startup online payment company. With my business partners in Mexico, we are expecting to launch the company in Mexico soon. With this company, I will continue to advise as an owner, but will not be involved in the day-to-day operations.
I know that I am a qualified and prepared person to work in Canada, but I also understand that my profile may be a tough one to fit in Canada due to the different legal systems operating in Canada and Mexico.
On the other hand, I know the mining industry is huge in Mexico and there is a lot of Canadian companies working down there. I would be interested in working as a liaison between te two countries, more so a community liaison. I think that as Mexican with a legal, public administration and government background I could contribute a lot to this industry.
With that being said, I am interested in building a career in Canada and that career does not necessarily have to relate to my legal background. With many possible options, I hope that you are able to assist me in finding the right one.
I found ten jobs in Canada on CareerMine under the category legal & audit. I am tempted to apply for the Goldcorp job titled Manager, Enterprise Risk Management. The person employed will “facilitate development of Goldcorp’s enterprise risk management strategy and implement actions required to improve risk management capabilities.” See the link for the rest of the details.
Surely a good lawyer can do this? If I were ten years younger, I would apply. Think of the pressure, the stress, the travel, the opposition, the issues, the laws, the risks, the money at stake, and the opportunities to make mining better. Damn, I wonder if they would consider a 68-year old man who is still not able to persuade himself to buy an electric bicycle but continues to plod up the Vancouver hills in pain and very slowly. And in fact walk up some of the hills that got steeper over the winter.
